FAREWELL CRAIG CAMPBELL

Craig in one of his many roles, supporting the Friends

You have been the Ranger for the Mount Worth State Park, and a number of other parks and reserves in the Latrobe region, for several decades. You have worked beside us as we have set about our tasks and we have really appreciated your gentle and professional guidance. We will miss you very much as you retire on the 3/7/20 and move onto the next stage of your life. We pass onto you our best wishes for a safe and healthy future.

Trail Run 2020 Cancelled

Due to the extraordinary health situation I guess you will not be surprised that we have to cancel the Mt Worth Trail Run for 2020 as a result of the current public health failure around the COVID19 pandemic.

Parks Victoria restrictions on friends activity, and indeed the availability of volunteers due to general movement restrictions, make adequate preparations impossible. This is on top of the obvious difficulties running the day would face, even at current limitation.

We are devastated that we will not be able to welcome you for the event this year, and will be processing your refunds as soon as possible. We are talking to Register Now about the process.

We considered re-scheduling as many events have, but cancellation and refund seems the fairest and most practical option. The end of year calendar is going to be jam packed (if anything is able to be run even then)! We are planning to run again in 2021, so put May 16 in your calendar right now!

We feel very strongly that you will need to get out in some way to stay fit and sane, so we note that: 1. (subject to any legal restrictions on you personally) you are at no more risk (nor a risk to anyone else) sitting in your car than sitting on your couch;

2. many parks (especially those out of town) remain open and able to offer good physical distancing – we of course are prejudiced and think of Mt Worth State Park.

3. if this is done responsibly many will have the best chance of seeing this crisis though in good condition – though it may be wise to bring your own materials like water and unfortunately even toilet paper (sadly some mindless peanut has raided the toilet paper at Mt Worth and we believe it is happening widely).

Hope we can get though this and see you all again in 2021.

On Thursday 28 November to demand real action for nature!

Join the Victorian National Parks Association, Environment Victoria, Victorian Environment Friends Network and other environment groups in Melbourne on Thursday 28 November.

It is very clear from the current state of Victoria’s environment that bold action is needed by the Andrews Government to protect the places and wildlife we love – our National Parks, forests, rivers, beaches, oceans, native plants and animals.

As biodiversity continues to rapidly decline, habitats become more stressed, species become more threatened, and the climate crisis escalates, we can’t waste any more time.

So let’s get together to show our community’s grave concern and urge for more action by the Andrews Government to address these urgent problems.

On Thursday 28 November, just before the fifth anniversary of the election of the Andrews Government, environment and community groups from across Victoria will rally together to demand bold action to protect Nature for Life.

Date: Thursday 28 November
Time: 12pm–2pm
Place: Parliament steps, Spring St, Melbourne
Followed by: BYO picnic in Treasury Gardens

We want to deliver a positive message of what can and should be done in this term of government to protect nature.

To make this happen, we need everyone to bring a banner, sign, puppet or other craft work to represent the special place you think deserves better protection from the government.

RSVP at the event page, set up by our friends at the Victorian National Parks Association >>

Annual Lyrebird Count – Sunday July 7

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Dawn over Mt Worth 29th of June, could be the sort of thing you could enjoy at the Friends Annual Lyrebird count coming up. We will start at the Moonlight Creek Picnic area at 6.45 and then survey Lyrebird calls as dawn rises. Bring very warm gear, a torch and a compass (if you have one). Using a “triangulation” technique we are able to identify individual birds to compare with numbers in previous years. We recorded a small increase between our first count in 2017 and the second in 2018, and hope that we will get a similar result this year. Contact us through the “contact” page on our website or message through Facebook if you would like to join us.

Giant Gippsland Earthworm – learn more

The Giant Gippsland Earthworm is only found in moist sites in Gippsland, nowhere else is the world! The Mt Worth Satet Park is the only public land in Victoria where the GGE is found.
